Jon ‘Recon’ Booth
Hi, I’m Jon, and my trail name is ‘Recon’. A fellow PCT hiker endowed the name upon me, due to my curious nature, constant need for information, and enthusiasm to get it (I would run ahead looking for the ‘best’ water or camp!).
Ramblin’ Recon is where I will document my adventures, share my love of the outdoors, and provide advice and inspiration for others.
My fascination with the outdoors began when I was 9 years old, with a summer hike to the summit of Mt. Marcy in the Adirondacks. I was lucky enough to grow up in Ithaca, NY where I also discovered skiing, sailing, and trail running. After moving to Boston, I found an active outdoor community, and spent most weekends rock climbing, mountaineering, and eating ice cream. In 2015, circumstances aligned, and I set out on a northbound thru-hike of the PCT. Since then, I’ve hiked 13,000 miles and counting!
I’m always seeking out ideas for new adventures, lighter and better gear, and new knowledge. And of course I’m happy to share what I’ve learned!

Hi Jon,
My name is Indie Stratton and I am planning on hiking the PCT in the spring of 2018. I’m a student of one of your Dad’s friends and he connected me with your info. He thought I should reach out to you for insight on the trail because you’ve already done so much long distance hiking. I have a few questions I would love to ask you about your year on the trail, if you would be open to communicating a little bit about your experience. I was wondering if there were any sections of the trail that were closed for you based on weather or fire hazards. Also I was curious how the section through the Sierras went, and if you had to forgo some of the trail due to snow.
I’m graduating a year early from high school to do the hike before I go to college hopefully to become an expeditionary studies major.
